14-9 at halftime hopefully the Pats can get the offensive game going in the second half and continue to put pressure and force picks on Rivers. Brady was a bit off in the first half maybe a playaction bomb to Moss to start the second half will do.

I refuse to get excited until they finish things up and win the Superbowl. After beating the Steelers, I've been of the mindset that anything less then winning all 19 wasn't worth getting excited for.

Honestly, I want to play the Pack. It'd just be fitting to be able to play and beat all of the top teams in the league. Opposed to the 72 'Phins and their 2 wins against winning teams all year. Damn it will be nice to not have to hear any more annoying Champagne popping BS.

Pats most overrated team ever - Brady most overrated QB ever. IF they had a real QB like Byron Leftwich they would have won. But, they had Brady's garbage ass who was too scared to stand in the pocket and make a good throw once he got hit a couple times.

Very disappointing, but the right team won.

The Giants were perfectly prepared and the Pats seemingly weren't prepared for the blitz packages. Where were the screen passes?

Oh well, maybe some of the haters will become more OBjective when we give this another try next year. It hurts a lot, as I feel bad for guys like Junior Seau and Randy Moss, but hopefully they both return and we can give it a shot next year.

All in all, they lost the biggest game of the year, but some amazing feats were accomplished this year. This is the only team in the history of pro football to be 18-0 at any one point. Losing was terrible, but maybe fans from across the nation will drop this jealous BS and realize that the Patriots are just a bunch of humble, hardworking guys who have come close to perfecting their craft.

Hate on, but I will be a Pats fan forever, and that was a crazy fucking football game (HOW DID JARVIS NOT SACK ELI!)

The lack of a plan for their blitz game lost it for us.

Also, to help get my mind off that loss, I have started to think about the offseason.

A list of UFAs:
LB Tedy Bruschi, starter
LB Mike Vrabel, starter
CB Randall Gay, 3rd CB
CB Asante Samuel, starter
FS Eugene Wilson, 3rd safety
WR Randy Moss, starter
WR Troy Brown
CB Chad Scott

Lots of defensive starters/important players the Pats need to resign/replace.

Stallworth will also be gone because if he stays, he would cost an approximate $10.5 million against the $116 million salary cap. Colvin will likely be released as well.

Vrabel, Moss and Samuel will be the Patriots first priorities in my honest opinion. Moss will almost surely be back if he gets a decent offer, Asante will be chasing the money, so the Pats better ante up if they want him. Vrabel will likely be offered a lot from other teams, but he may choose to stay in New England for another chance to compete for approx. $4 mill a year or so.

As far as the free agent market goes, I think we are going to be searching to upgrade the linebackers. With Colvin and Vrabel possibly gone, Terrell Suggs of the Ravens becomes an immediate option. The guy is only 25, yet he has played 5 years in the league while consistently producing double digit sack numbers in the Ravens defense. An unrestricted FA himself, he only fits in 3-4 schemes, and would be a perfect compliment to x-teammate Adalius Thomas, who could very well play the other outside spot. I have to do a little more research to see who is going to be available at MLB this off-season, but one guy to keep an eye on is Panther MLB Dan Morgan, who would seemingly fit very well in this defense.
Other positions of need are a solid #2 CB (or #1 if Asante departs), also a #2 DT to back Vince Wilfork up and possibly another physical safety, to come in and spare Rodney in situations, to keep him fresh.

I'd like to see Seau, Bruschi, and a lot of the other productive veterans back, but to be most intelligent I think we have to limit their roles so that they are never vulnerable.

They do the hats and T-shirts every year for every team in the Super Bowl. The parade thing doesn't bother me either. What bothered me was everyone talking and acting as if the Patriots going 19-0 was inevitable. Talk about books, trademarks, dvds and all that stuff after the game. You guys are nitpicking and ridiculous.

In a day where I (and every other real Pats fan) am down, and everyone comes kicking. Every great team has books, trademarks and products. The PATRIOTS organization did nothing out of the ordinary, you guys are all just a bunch of fucking haters. The PLAYERS and MEN behind the logo and helmets are great guys who are respectable and have deserved all the success they have had. If you are going to blame anyone, you SHOULD blame fans and idiots who trademark book names who have NOTHING to do with the game itself, and NOT place blame upon the people who dedicate their lives to this game, who are legends for multiple reasons, like Tedy Bruschi (who came back from a stroke), Wilfork (both parents passed when he was in college), Seau (still chasing that ring), Moss (everything but the ring), and so much more.

I don't care if you root for the Giants or don't like the Patriots as a football team, but it really bothers me when these guys are portrayed very inaccurately as a bunch of jerks, when they are all united for a single cause, and they treat each other like brothers.

HEY, PATRIOTS, COPYRIGHT THIS *
By KATE SHEEHY and NEIL GRAVES
THAT'S A BIG '1':A Giants fan's T-shirt prediction came true at Phoenix University Stadium last night.
February 4, 2008 -- They're patent losers.

Less than three weeks after the pathetically pompous New England Patriots filed to copyright "19-0" and "19-0 The Perfect Season," the Giants kicked their asterisks, leaving the trampled team and their premature slogans of victory in the dust. But one organization that never doubted the Giants' ability to pull through was The Post, which put its money where its mouth is and ponied up $375 to copyright "18-1," in reference to the Patriots' far-from-perfect season.

It was an easy bet to make, given the Patriots' incredibly large, egotistical attitude.

"I come from a town that's incredibly superstitious, and there is a phrase, 'You don't want to disturb the gambling gods,' and there is a segment of the population that thinks [the Patriots messed] with the gambling gods" by filing for the copyrights before the game was played, said famed oddsmaker Tony Sinisi of Las Vegas.

Not only did New England mess with the gambling gods, they also may have messed with the Senate.

Pennsylvania Republican Arlen Specter reportedly plans to contact a former Patriots video assistant to see what he knows about an alleged taping of the St. Louis Rams' pregame walk-through before the 2002 Super Bowl.

The Patriots have already denied they videotaped the NFL ritual, where teams go through plays at half speed on the day before a game.

But Specter said he still might want to speak with the assistant, Matt Walsh, according to ESPN.com.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told the Web site that he reserved the right to readdress the probe.

If Walsh "has information inconsistent with what we have, we want to talk to him," he said.

But Goodell he told Sirius NFL Radio yesterday that "I'm comfortable that [the incident] didn't happen."

The Rams lost Super Bowl XXXVI to the Patriots on the last play of the game, 20-17.

Specter also plans to contact Goodell today about the latest Patriots "Spy Gate" controversy - their taping of Jets defensive signals in this season's opener.

And he wants to know more about why the NFL destroyed the tapes.

"It could go to hearings," Specter said. "This is a matter to be considered by the [Senate Judiciary] Committee."

The five stages of Patriots grief
By DJ Gallo
Page 2
(Archive | Contact)
Updated: February 4, 2008, 12:18 PM ET

It's a sad day in Boston. Happy and full of joy everywhere else, of course. But sad in Boston.

Bostonians are coming to grips with the demise of the greatest team ever the New England Patriots.

As you may know, there are five stages of grief: denial and Isolation, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

This is how Patriots fans will progress through the various stages. Please be understanding of their plight. Keep your pointing and laughing to a minimum.

Stage 1: Denial and isolation

No! No! No! No! Noooooooooooo! No! No! No! No! No! Noooooooooooo! This did not happen.

Eli Manning beat the "best team ev-uh" in the Super Bowl? This cannot be happening.
There is no way this happened. It's impossible. There is no way Eli Manning -- Eli Manning! -- stopped us in the Super Bowl from going 19-0. Eli Manning did not just beat Tom Brady. Tom Brady did not get knocked out of the playoffs in back-to-back years by the Manning brothers. I refuse to believe it. Such a world does not exist.

I just can't deal with it right now. I don't want to talk to anyone. I just want to be alone. I'm not taking calls from any of my friends: K-Dog, Hump, Tiny, Fletch, B-Scratch, Thumper, Tommy K, Tommy J, The Mikester, Jazzy Jeff, Big Jimbo, B-Rad, Shempo, The Chad-Meister, Stink or Todd.

If I talk about it with them, that means I'm not dreaming and the Pats really lost. I am not yet prepared to face such a reality. My entire identity and self-worth hinges on the ability to act smug about the supposed supremacy of Boston's sports teams, as though I had something to do with their performance on the field.

If that goes away, I am an empty shell. I am a fraud. I would have nothing. And I'm not ready yet to deal with that. So I will simply deny that it happened.

I need to go someplace where I can get my thoughts together. Someplace quiet and empty. Where could that be in Boston? Oh, I know. Anywhere along the normal championship parade route.

Noooooooooooo!

Stage 2: Anger

I have a friggin' Patriots helmet tattooed on my head! On my bald head! What am I supposed to do? I feel foolish now! I wouldn't have done it if I knew they were going to lose. I just feel so misled! I feel so stupid.

Not as stupid as Bill Belichick, though. Genius? Yeah, right. You cheat in Week 1 against the Jets, but can't muster up a worthwhile cheating plot in the Super Bowl when it matters? Moron. Oh, and did you notice when you were walking off the field before the game was over that we lost by three points? Nice call going for it on fourth-and-13 when we were in field-goal range! Who helped you make that genius decision: Girlfriend A or Girlfriend B? You just got outcoached by Tom Coughlin. Badly. By Tom Coughlin! Half of the man's brain is still frozen from the Green Bay game, yet he made you look like Rich Kotite.

And Tom Brady … really? You needed a haircut from your stylist the night before the game?!

Maybe you should have spent more time watching film, you dainty little girl. And didn't you learn anything from Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson?

What's with having Gisele there watching from a luxury box? She shouldn't have been there. Actually, no. She should have been there. On the field. Playing for you. I'm sure her 72-pound body could have withstood the pass rush better than you, nancy boy. You're dead to me, Tom Brady. (Although I will be open to impassioned, aggressive make-up sex. Call me.)

Rodney Harrison and Vince Wilfork, you may not call me. You guys get all of these personal foul penalties and fines in games that don't matter, and then come up with nothing in the Super Bowl? Way to choke, losers. Maybe if one of you had kicked Eli Manning in the crotch while he was standing in the huddle, we'd be Super Bowl champions today. Harrison, how do you let David Tyree catch that pass against his head on you over the middle on the final drive? After he scored their first touchdown, he shouldn't have had a head. You should have decapitated him. I thought you were smart. One would think you'd have a big brain inside that giant, HGH head of yours.

Senator Specter, are you just hating on the Patriots because they beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl?
Oh, and go to hell, Sen. Arlen Specter. (Or stay in Philadelphia. Same thing.) Get over it, you loser. Your Eagles lost. They weren't good enough to beat us. The Patriots are better than the Eagles. Just like New Kids are better than The Eagles. (I love Donnie!) And who are you, anyway? I never heard of you. If you're not a Kennedy, you're crap. Come up here to a real state and let Teddy take you for a drive out to Chappaquiddick.

And same to you, Boston Globe. Thanks for jinxing the team with the 19-0 book.

Next time I am out of toilet paper, I will purchase your rag. Meanwhile, I hope there are a bunch of kids in third-world nations who want to read a book of fiction about an undefeated American football team.

Stage 3: Bargaining

OK, look … there's got to be a way to make this right. What do you want us to do?

Do you want us to admit that we cheated to win those other three Super Bowls? Fine. We cheated. Asterisk those babies up. We admit it. Just please -- please, please, please, PLEASE! -- don't take away our perfect season. We'll trade those other three titles for 19-0. Just let us play the game over. Come on. Be fair. That's a good deal.

I can't even believe I'm saying this, but do you want me to admit that Tom Brady is overrated? I will. I'll say it. I'll say it if you'll let the Patriots play the game over. Do you see how far you're making me go? How much I want this? I am willing to speak a negative word about the most beautiful and perfect man ever made. I'll admit that he stunk in that playoff game against the Broncos two years ago. And that he blew our chances last year against the Colts by throwing that interception in the fourth quarter. And that he was a big zero in the Super Bowl against the Giants. He's been folding under pressure in big games for three years in a row. He's like a Manning, but with a better jaw line and two fewer Super Bowls since 2004.

I'll do anything to make this different. Say that Rodney Harrison is an HGH-fueled cheater? You got it. That the tuck rule was a sham? No doubt about it. That Bill Belichick once coached the Browns. Sure, I guess.

Roger Goodell … come on, man! We're in this together. Once you trusted Belichick to tell you the truth and then destroyed all of those tapes, our fates became intertwined. If we go down, you go down, ginger boy. So it's time for you to trust Belichick again. Here's what you do. First, destroy all of the game tapes from the Super Bowl to get rid of the evidence. Then, call up Belichick. He'll tell you that we beat the Giants. Then just go to the public and say: "The Patriots beat the Giants in the Super Bowl. Bill Belichick told me they did. He promised me he was being truthful, so I took him at his word." See how easy that would be?

Hey, I'll even admit that I never even heard of the New England Patriots before January 2002. Well, I heard of them. But I always thought they were, like, some kind of Revolutionary War re-enactors or something.

Come on. I'm being straight with you here. Give the Patriots another shot. Best out of three? Best out of seven? How about seven? The Red Sox lost the first three in 2004 to the Yankees and still came back and won.

Yankees suck!

Stage 4: Depression

Life is not worth living.

I've spent the past five months of my life telling everyone I know how great the Patriots are and how much their team sucks. I've called radio shows. TV shows. Written countless words on Internet message boards. My entire self-esteem was based on the success of a football team filled with a bunch of players I've never met in my life.

Now I have nothing. They'll get over it. They're rich. They have hot wives and girlfriends. But I have nothing. Just this tattoo on my head and a crappy, second-shift job at Dunkin' Donuts.

There's not hope for the future, either.

Tom Brady is balding. He's past his prime. It's all downhill from here. He's in his 30s now. He'll never get close to 50 touchdown passes again. His ankle is hurt. His shoulder is all messed up. Who knows what else is being hidden in the injury report. Gout? Scabies? Mumps? Measles? Rubella? Gisele will see the writing on the wall soon enough. She'll dump him. Then he'll start dating Jessica Simpson. And then it will get worse from there. Three years from now, he'll have a 65 quarterback rating and four kids with Britney Spears. We should just use our first-round pick this year to draft a quarterback and get it over with. Goodbye, Tom.

And goodbye Rodney Harrison, Junior Seau, Mike Vrabel and Tedy Bruschi. You could all retire. Or not. It doesn't matter either way. Without you, our already suspect defense is decimated. With you, we're another year older and slower. Next year, we're going to all offense and absolutely no defense. Ohmigod … we're going to be the 2004 and 2005 Colts.

I think I'm going to throw up.

Stage 5: Acceptance

OK. So we lost. It happened. We were 18-0 and lost in the Super Bowl to Eli friggin' Manning and the New York Giants. It still sounds insane to say that out loud, but facts are facts.

Truth is, I'm fine with it. That's three years in a row the Patriots haven't won a Super Bowl. What kind of dynasty is that? If they're not going to represent Boston the right way and win championships, they can get lost. I'll go back to pretending they don't exist like I did before January 2002. I mean, they're not even a Boston team. They play in Foxborough. That's where they belong, too, the losers. I've got better things to do with my time than root for a bunch of losers.

Like root for the Celtics, for example. Best record in the NBA, baby! How 'bout them apples?! You know you are jealous! Your teams sucks compared to the Celtics!

I'm going to go get Brian Scalabrine's face tattooed on my head.

LOL, if any of your teams were 18-0, of course they'd prepare for 19-0.

You guys are fucking retarded. the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS have nothing to do with their marketing team. Morons.

We need to get younger, of course, but the way we have been so good is that players have made sacrifices to try to come and win. Picking up Ty Law on the cheap would be great as an insurance or to fill in for Ellis Hobbs, who should be a Nickel back at best.

I'm slowly getting over the brutal loss. It will always bother me, but at the same time, we could have easily lost to any of the great teams we beat this year and we are going to be bringing back most of the pieces that made us a dominant force. I truly believe that what doesn't kill you (or handicapped), makes you stronger.

Nope... It didn't really matter; it's a moot point.
That said, the clock WAS run incorrectly by league officials.

Like I said, I'm basically over it. It hurts to see/hear/talk about, but nothing can be done, and the other team won. It happens.

All I know is that Asante and Randy want to be back, and if we get both of them back, we are money in the bank to win a SB in the next year or two. All I care about is rings at this point, and the Patriots learn a valuable lesson.

If healthy, Dan Morgan is a B+ level middle linebacker. Because he is so injury prone, he will be on the cheap, where he is a steal. Bruschi and Seau are best suited in situational roles, and adding a cheap guy like Dan Morgan at least solidifies the position.

This guy was the best MLB in the country in college at THE U, but he has just hurt himself too much since he was drafted in the first round. When healthy, he is a big time player, as evidenced by his performance against the Patriots in the SB a few years back.

He runs about a 4.6, has good size (approx: 6'2 245), closes on the ball in coverage, and is a playmaker. I think he is absolutely the perfect REPLACEMENT for what a prime Tedy Bruschi brought to the table. That said, Dan wouldn't be a long-term solution as he is 29 now and as mentioned, has an extensive injury list. The dude only played like 60 out of 115 games while on the Panthers, so he can't be very expensive, and if he gets hurt, place him on the IR.

Keep in mind he made the pro-bowl in 2005, and last season before he partially tore his achilles tendon he had 22 tackles in 3 games.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua -- The New England Patriots won the Super Bowl and ended the season with a perfect 19-0 record -- at least it looks that way in Nicaragua.

The NFL donated 290 Patriots hats and an equal number of team jerseys trumpeting the slogans "Super Bowl Champions, 19-0" to impoverished children from two small communities in southern Nicaragua.

Thursday's gifts could not change history -- the Patriots lost the Feb. 3 game to the New York Giants 17-14 -- but they made a lot of youngsters in the communities of San Gregorio and Buena Vista very happy, said Miriam Diaz, spokeswoman for the humanitarian organization World Vision, which arranged the donation with the NFL.

"They [Patriots] lost, but the children won," Diaz said.

The only "football" most of the children know is soccer, but they were very enthusiastic about the U.S. version of the game once the rules were explained to them, she said.

"They were very happy to receive the hats and jerseys," Diaz said. "They said they did not expect such a surprise."

Neither did the Patriots.

Vernon Gholston and Brandon Flowers have caught my eye recently as Patriots style defensive players to look at for the #7 pick. I think Gholston is definitely rated higher on scouts boards.

Vernon Gholston is much like a Willie McGinest in my eyes. He brings an OLB/DE hybrid that injects some youth into the unit. The possible Zach Thomas pickup gives us depth in the middle, which would possibly leave Adalius, Vrabel, Colvin, and Gholston to man the 2 outside backer spots on a regular basis.

Of course, much of my speculation about the CB spot relies on how Flowers runs at his pro day or combine, because there is some question about his ability to play man coverage. His cover 2 skills are unquestionable.

BBR, If you think Moss is leaving, you are crazy.

There would be no reason to sign him to a franchise tag offer. That would mean we would pay him $10 mill this year, and have to re-sign him next off-season.

Not a good idea, correct?

This is actually encouraging... the only way we would have franchised him is if he DIDN'T really want to come back but we felt we needed him (Ala Asante last season).

Don't jump the gun, there is business involved.

Also, it sounds ridiculous, but my father owns a medical company, and he had a job working for the Patriots assistant offensive coordinator (the first guy in charge behind Josh McDaniels). The guy made it clear that the organization wanted Moss and Moss wanted to be back, he said the same of Vrabel. He was not convinced of Asante, however.

Ty Law has mentioned a possible return to New England, but it seems doubtful as he said "If the price is right". The Pats won't shell out big money for him, he is a #2 at this point.
